Standing Together Against Gender-Based Violence
Through education, public awareness and community partnerships, CFUW Aurora/Newmarket works alongside local organizations and municipalities to raise awareness of gender-based violence, support prevention efforts and encourage meaningful community action.
November 25 marks the United Nations’ International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women and the beginning of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence. CFUW Aurora/Newmarket participates through community collaboration and visible public action.
Through Light the Night Purple and Raising the Flag Against Gender-Based Violence, our communities come together in a visible stand against gender-based violence.

CFUW Walks to Break the Silence
Together, We Made an Impact
Each year, CFUW Aurora/Newmarket has participated in Yellow Brick House’s annual Break the Silence Walk in support of women and children escaping domestic violence.
The event celebrates its 10th year in 2026 and has raised more than $370,000 over the past four years to fund essential shelter, counselling, and crisis support services.

Team CFUW proudly took part again in November 2025, raising $3,005—exceeding our fundraising goal by 20%. Over the past two years, our members and supporters have contributed a combined total of $5,785 to this important cause.

Every small step toward sustainability makes a difference. Through our Environment Quick Moments, the Advocacy Committee shares practical, easy-to-follow tips in each monthly newsletter to help members make environmentally conscious choices at home and in our community.
From conserving water and reducing waste to understanding our expanded recycling program and requesting the right-sized bins, each edition offers simple ideas you can put into practice right away.

Pizza & Politics
Where Ideas Become Action
Each spring, our Advocacy Committee hosts Pizza & Politics, an interactive evening that brings members together to explore and debate the resolutions that shape CFUW's advocacy work.
Held before the April general meeting, the event combines discussion, learning, and voting with an informal dinner. Members review current resolutions, exchange perspectives, and build a deeper understanding of the issues before casting their votes.
The inaugural event welcomed 26 members and demonstrated how thoughtful conversation, civic engagement, and a shared meal can inspire informed advocacy and strengthen member participation.

How We Advocate
Our Advocacy Committee leads our club in learning about key issues and finding meaningful ways to respond. Members can get involved in many ways, including the following.
Reviewing and Revising Resolutions
Our committee leads members through a thoughtful review of the proposed annual resolutions distributed by the CFUW National and Provincial Committees. Together, we discuss, refine, and vote on proposed changes that reflect our club's values and priorities before submitting them for consideration.
Create Awareness & Taking Action
We raise awareness, inspire action, and provide members with the tools to make their voices heard. By bringing important issues to the attention of our members, we encourage meaningful civic engagement through activities such as writing letters, signing petitions, and contacting elected representatives, including MPs, MPPs, and municipal councillors.

Each year CFUW members study proposed resolutions from CFUW National and CFUW Ontario Council before voting on them at Annual Meetings.

Minimizing the Negative Effects of Postpartum
Improved screening, support and services are essential for the health and well-being of mothers and their families.
In February 2026, study groups will review and make recommendations on these resolutions.
Members will vote on the recommendations in April 2026. The president will then carry our club's voting results to the CUW National.
